The Artists

Frans de Leij

Frans was born in The Netherlands in 1959 and in 1986 he moved to England and now lives in Rustington on the West Sussex coast. His paintings have gained rapidly in popularity and can be found in private and corporate collections in Britain and abroad. In 2006 he was elected a member of the Sussex Watercolour Society. Frans is a great admirer of the impressionist paintings of Trevor Chamberlain, Edward Seago, John Yardley and Nina Engle, whose paintings are realistic yet entirely ‘loose’. “I have always been interested in nature. It is therefore not surprising that the English countryside and the sea inspire many of my paintings. In particular I am attracted by the way light, shade and atmospheric conditions unify objects within the landscape. Furthermore, I like the feeling of space and tranquility that are found in the natural world. The challenge for me as an artist, is to get these emotional qualities transmitted to paper, allowing them to be shared with others”
